There was no draft this year. It was carried over to next year because of the COVID shortened season.

Draft always starts on Feb 1st (excluding this year where it was skipped since we didn’t count the past season as legit)

SMH. No! The draft is 5 rounds, hence why we only have 5 draft picks in yahoo that count. It is also not a FYPD, as it is not just for first year players. It is a minor league draft that includes all players unclaimed yet part of a MLB affiliate. As long as said player is signed by a mlb team, had less that 250 AB’s or 100 IP in his Major league career he is eligible to be drafted.

I also feel like we may want to take a look at this, as well. There are 360 eligible minor league slots in this league(12 teams x 30 slots). There are currently 251 "rookies" occupying those slots. Add the 60 draft picks that we are drafting this year and that comes to 311 slots will be filled out of 360. There are also lots of "slugs" currently occupying spots on minor league rosters. With only 5 rounds each year, we will probably never get back to the 360 spots available...

I think it clearly increases the value of the draft pick. If you add too many picks the value of the minor leaguer gets devalued. Honestly I have never seen a problem with it at 5 picks and prefer it this way but am always open to change if so desired. I hate to punish those that draft well, evaluate well, get a bit lucky, and attempt to maintain both the minors and majors. Several here have traded some superstars to inherit picks to ensure they have an ample farm to constantly regenerate talent..why should we punish them now and reward others who traded away their picks for mlb talent to try and win now? Not saying either way is right or wrong, but I hate changing rules just for the sake of change too. Again, just my opinions. I realize some inherited teams from former owners that neglected farms and they feel slighted by 5 picks.

Again, any changes, if there were to be any, would be about future drafts, not the Feb 1 2022 draft. Since all of those picks were traded and accounted during the past two seasons worth of play. This would be about the following drafts and years beyond if any change was to be implemented.

I am okay with 5 rounds. One thing I have seen in a league that might be a compromise here though is a “supplement pick” that goes to the lowest ranked teams. We could choose the lowest 4 teams for example, and they each get a sandwich pick at the end of the 1st round, prior to the 2nd round picks happening. A way to help out a rebuild if you will but not enough to really tank for.

I think 5 round is fine. The biggest reason the minor league count is down a little (presently @ 248) is because we didn't have a minor league draft in 2021 because of the shortened season. If we did, we would be around 308 and wouldn't be able to accommodate 60 additional picks in the 2022 draft without some teams dropping or promoting additional players. If there comes a time where we feel we need to replenish the minors system, perhaps we can add a few picks for a season to restock the system. I just can't see additional picks every year.

After the draft that we have in the spring, we will still be down about 50 open minor league spots. There will certainly be many other players promoted and/or cut because of "exhausted eligibility" during the course of the season and next off-season. Many trades that are made throughout the season also require a player or two to be cut. I don't know the exact number of players that this happened to this season, but I would guess that 50-60 players get cut or promoted each season. So I'm not sure how we would get back close to the 30 minors per team, without some kind of supplemental draft. I would say most dynasty leagues, you can add minor league players throughout the season, so it is much easier to manage the number. But there has to be something we can agree on, to level back up the playing field for the guys that have taken over teams with depleted minors, in my opinion.

Generally we have about 20-30 exceeding minor league rights yearly. Russ has the exact number and can correct me. As far as trades causing dropping of minors, that only occurs if a member is at 30 and needs the space to add more, which is very rare honestly as most have some space. I acquired a bunch of picks so did drop some minors to accommodate picks, but I also traded some quality mlb players to obtain those picks, to offer someone a free “compensation” pick and devalue the picks I traded quality Mlb players for is a slap in the face honestly
